Tragedy, comedy, repetition in Synge marathon

GARRY HYNES can create powerful theatrical pictures, using the stage as a canvas as well as an arena. All six plays share Francis O’Connor’s magnificent set: high, high washed green walls, lit in eye-thrilling, painterly ways; a dirt floor; a peat fire whose thin smoke rises constantly. It is, significantly, hard to tell whether this is indoors or outdoors.
