Penelope

‘Flawlessly performed, what a magnificent, cheeky play this is from Enda Walsh’- The Guardian
‘snarling, mesmerizing howl of a black comedy’- The Washington Post

In 2011, Penelope by Enda Walsh received its London debut (Feb 10 – Mar 5) at the Hampstead Theatre in London and also ran at The Studio Theatre in Washington DC (Mar 15 – Apr 3) as part of New Ireland: The Enda Walsh Festival.

This tour was presented as part of Imagine Ireland, Culture Ireland’s year-long season of Irish arts in America in 2011. Other Druid shows in the US that year included a 17 week coast to coast tour of The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh and The Silver Tassie by Sean O’Casey as part of the Lincoln Center Festival in New York.

In 2010 Druid premiered Penelope at Galway Arts Festival where it received rave reviews and was one of the highlights of the Festival. In what was a major achievement for the play, it made The New York Times top ten theatre highlights of 2010. It also won a prestigious Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, played at the Helsinki Stage Festival, toured Ireland and ran for three weeks at St. Ann’s Warehouse in New York.

“I have given myself to a possibility of love with you! But you have turned me into this, you have reduced me, Penelope… to a fat man in SPEEDOS.”
"It’s 11.30am and already it’s 33 degrees Celsius. At the bottom of a drained swimming pool, four ridiculous men face their inevitable deaths, and play for an unwinnable love."

Druid would like to acknowledge the continued support of the Arts Council in funding the company’s work and also the support of Culture Ireland in funding its international touring programme.
