The Beauty Queen of Leenane

By Martin McDonagh

Druid presents a modern classic of Irish theatre. The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh, is set in the mountains of Connemara and tells the story of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early 40s, and Mag, her manipulative, aging mother. Mag’s interference in Maureen’s first and potentially last romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific.

Garry Hynes directs with the stellar cast of Marie Mullen, Aisling O’Sullivan, Marty Rea and Aaron Monaghan (all members of the Druid Ensemble).

‘Spellbinding, terrifying’- The Observer
‘Like the best work in any dramatic genre, it is almost unanswerable’- New York Magazine
‘McDonagh re-creates traditional Irish family drama only to set it ablaze with a postmodern blowtorch’- LA Times
‘Hynes expertly teases out the dramatic ironies of McDonagh's tightly twisting plot devices for all their suspense and excruciating comic effect’- LA Weekly
‘Druid’s masterly new production makes you laugh until you’re sore. But it leaves you hurting just the same’- Irish Examiner
