2020

Druid in Cinemas

March 2020

In a first for Irish theatre, Druid broadcasts its new production of Tom Murphy’s version of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard live from Galway to cinemas across Ireland and the UK.

This live cinema broadcast occurs during a Galway run of the play; a Dublin run at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is cancelled due to the arrival of Covid-19.

Druid in Coole Park

September – October 2020

With the country in lockdown, Druid travel to Lady Gregory’s home, Coole Park, for DruidGregory, a new play cycle production of her one-act plays.

The production then embarks on a barnstorming 14-venue, 4-week tour of Gregory’s beloved county Galway, from Portumna to Glenamaddy, Ballinasloe to Clifden, and many more communities in between.

The tour includes unique one-off outdoor performances at some of Galway’s most historic sites such as Kylemore Abbey, Teach an Phiarsaigh and Ballyglunin Station. Performances of On the Outside by Tom Murphy and Noel O’Donoghue are also included in the programme of plays.

2021

Once Upon a Bridge

February 2021

Druid ventures into live online theatre with the world premiere of Sonya Kelly’s new play.

Starring Siobhán Cullen, Adetomiwa Edun and Aaron Monaghan, Once Upon a Bridge is viewed by audiences in 35 countries around the world.

The Seagull

August 2021

As pandemic restrictions continue, Druid returns to Coole Park for an outdoor production of Thomas Kilroy’s The Seagull (after Chekhov).

The production is also filmed and streamed online a few weeks later as part of Galway International Arts Festival.

Sorry, Wrong Number

August 2021

For the first time in its history, Druid takes to the national airwaves for a radio play broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1’s Drama On One.

Sorry, Wrong Number by Lucille Fletcher stars Marie Mullen and a host of cameo appearances by other well known Irish actors.

Three Short Comedies

November 2021

In line with government pandemic guidelines, Druid's return to indoor performances features a trio of one-acts by Sean O'Casey.

A Pound on Demand, Bedtime Story and The End of the Beginning play Galway, Kilkenny, Wexford and Dún Laoghaire.

These short comedies act as curtain-raisers for DruidO'Casey in 2023.

2022

University Partnership

January 2022

Building on an existing partnership first formalised in 2010, Druid and the University of Galway announce a new 10-year partnership to focus on expanding academic links, student engagement, local and global events and the creative sector in the West.

At the heart of the partnership is the Druid Academy, the Druid Archive and the Druid Artist-in-Residence position.

We are delighted to announce the next stage of this academic partnership, deepening the relationship between ourselves, the students and the wider academic community in the University of Galway, the place where Druid was founded in 1975.'

The Cavalcaders

May 2022

Druid return to the work of Billy Roche following Belfry (1993) and Poor Beast in the Rain (1995).

Druid Ensemble member Aaron Monaghan directs a cast of six led by fellow Druid Ensemble member Garrett Lombard.

The production opens in Galway and then visits nine venues on a national tour, Druid's first full tour since lockdown.

The Last Return

July 2022

Sonya Kelly’s latest production for Druid premieres at The Mick Lally Theatre as part of Galway International Arts Festival before runs at Traverse Theatre for Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Gate Theatre for Dublin Theatre Festival, plus an 8-venue national tour the following spring.

The Last Return is a smash-hit, earning five-star reviews, a Fringe First Award in Edinburgh, and two Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards. The production also breaks Druid’s national touring box office records.

2023

DruidO’Casey

July – October 2023

Druid’s latest play cycle production tackles the great works of Sean O’Casey, his Dublin Trilogy of plays: The Plough and the Stars, The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock.

Following a launch in March that broke box office records in both Galway and Dublin, the production rehearses for 10 weeks before opening at the Town Hall Theatre in July as part of Galway International Arts Festival, then touring to the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, and finishing with American dates in New York and Michigan.

Garry Hynes takes home the Best Director award at the UK Theatre Awards for her work on the five-star play cycle.

2024

Endgame

July 2024

Endgame at the 2024 Galway International Arts Festival is a five-star return to the work of Samuel Beckett following Druid's barnstorming three-year run of Waiting for Godot a few years earlier.

The production is remounted in the winter of 2025 for a month-long run in New York.

The House

September 2024

40 years since their first Tom Murphy production, Druid present The House at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway and at the Gaiety Theatre for Dublin Theatre Festival.

Directed by Garry Hynes, the cast is led by Marie Mullen and Marty Rea.

2025

50th Anniversary

Druid marks its 50th anniversary with a double bill of Synge’s Riders to the Sea and Shakespeare’s Macbeth in Galway in July, followed by a Dublin transfer of Macbeth and a New York transfer of Beckett’s Endgame later in the year.

The anniversary year also includes a national tour of Three Short Comedies by Sean O'Casey, two publications, two exhibitions, a symposium at the University of Galway, and a series of public talks.
