As rehearsals began this week, we are gearing up for Druid's first major event of 2020. Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, in a version by Tom Murphy, directed by Garry Hynes, will open next month at the Black Box Theatre, Galway before transferring to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin. In a first for Irish theatre, The Cherry Orchard will also be live-streamed to cinemas across Ireland and the world direct from Galway.
With the acclaimed creative team behind DruidShakespeare, this production will feature a large company of actors, starring Derbhle Crotty and other leading members of the Druid Ensemble, Garrett Lombard, Aaron Monaghan, Rory Nolan and Marty Rea. They will be joined by Ian-Lloyd Anderson, Siobhán Cullen, Megan Cusack, Peter Daly, Rachel Feeney, Helen Norton, John Olohan and a local ensemble of actors.
Druid’s production of The Cherry Orchard, a play about land, legacy, and the struggle between tradition and change, will be the first major production of Tom Murphy’s work since his death in 2018.
